About Longhorn Racing

Longhorn Racing is UT Austin’s student-run engineering organization. Students design, build, test, and race their own vehicles at Formula SAE and the Formula Sun Grand Prix, gaining hands-on experience from CAD and manufacturing to testing and competition. This campaign keeps that work going and makes sure every team reaches the track.

Other ways to give

Give through the Cockrell School of Engineering

Donate directly to Longhorn Racing through UT Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering. Gifts are tax-deductible and count toward recognition tiers.

On the UT giving form, go to “Click/Search for a fund,” search for “Longhorn Racing,” and select the team you’d like to support.

After giving, email contact@longhornracing.org so we can recognize your gift.

Combustion

Founded in 1981, Longhorn Racing’s internal combustion team was an original founding member of the Formula SAE competition. The team builds a composites-based aerodynamics package, a fully welded titanium exhaust with a custom 3D-printed intake and fuel tank, and a lightweight frame with optimized ergonomic packaging.

  • 10th overall of 55 teams, Formula SAE Michigan 2022
  • 11th in Design, 2023
  • 28th overall of 100+ teams, Formula SAE 2026

Electric

Longhorn Racing Electric is UT Austin’s student-run Formula SAE Electric team. Each year, members design, manufacture, test, and race a new formula-style electric car from the ground up, including a custom high-voltage battery pack, power electronics, controls, telemetry, aerodynamics, chassis, suspension, and drivetrain.

  • 9th of 84 teams in Cost, Formula SAE Electric 2026
  • Design score improved from 60 to 105 points, 2026
  • More than 275 miles of testing, the most of any LHRE car

Solar

Founded in 1988, Longhorn Racing Solar is one of the oldest student engineering teams on campus and one of the original ten teams to compete in the American Solar Challenge. The team designs and builds road-legal solar vehicles, from a custom electronics package and high-voltage battery to a carbon-fiber composite chassis and an aerodynamic body that houses the solar array.

  • 18th of 47 entrants at the 2026 Formula Sun Grand Prix
  • 59 laps (183 miles) over three days at Brainerd International Raceway
  • The team’s first time on the grid in over a decade
